The Museum of San Matteo

Housed in a majestic eleventh century monastery, the Museum of San Matteo in Pisa is one of the most important n Europe for Medieval art. The most important works by Pisan masters of painting and sculpture are hung on its walls, and it also acts as a mirror of all Tuscan art, not just from that period.

There are various rooms that you can visit in this museum, easily reached from our Pisa hotel, for example there is an early Christian sarcophagus in the archaeological area, dating back to the fifth century, while in rooms three to six you can lose yourself in the ancient history of Pisa. Continuing through the museum you will have the chance to see the Islamic and Pisan ceramics housed here, from excavations but also from private donations to the museum. Particularly interesting is the large room dedicated to Andrea and Nino Pisano, father and son, who gave a large and powerful boost to Pisan sculpture, so much so that their works can be seen in the city's most famous monuments.

Art lovers staying at our Pisa hotel cannot miss the XVI room, heart of the museum, where the famous series of painted crosses from the twelfth t the thirteenth century are displayed. Among these stands the altar cross by Giunta, the most famous in the whole museum, the greatest expression of his artistic journey, who was able to perfectly render the passion of Christ on the cross. Continue your visit with a journey through Tuscan artistic history to the eighteenth century, for total immersion in one of the most important local attractions.
